Recent studies have determined that Victoza, an FDA-approved type 2 diabetes drug, has the potential to cause a number of adverse, possibly life-threatening side effects. Complications associated with Victoza have been reported to include pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, thyroid cancer, and serious allergic reactions. What’s the Problem With Victoza?
Victoza was a controversial drug before it even hit the market. In approving the medicine, the U.S. Food & drug Administration (FDA) chose to ignore the recommendations of a number of its drug safety reviewers. In pre-approval clinical studies, Victoza was shown to cause thyroid tumors in laboratory rats, although the FDA said at the time that it was uncertain as to whether Victoza could cause thyroid cancer in humans. The clinical safety reviewer stated that at the time, there were already more than 10 different diabetes drugs on the market, so there was little need to approve another medication, especially one that has the potential to cause serious side effects.

Victoza Recall Petition
In April 2012, the prominent watchdog group Public Citizen sent a letter to the FDA requesting that it pull Victoza off the market immediately, claiming that the drug’s risks outweigh any possible benefits. According to Public Citizen, Victoza puts users at risk of developing thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, allergic reactions, and kidney failure.
“More and more people are taking this drug, and more people are experiencing serious health problems as a result,” Public Citizen director Sidney Wolfe, MD, said in a statement. “Clearly, the FDA’s warning system is not sufficient. The drug should be taken off the market.” Click here to read more about Public Citizen’s petition to recall Victoza from WebMD. For More Information: California Victoza Lawyer.
